Why? Because your database is, almost certainly, the culprit for any slowness in your application that occurs on your end of the wire (e.g. not counting network chatter). If you can reduce unnecessary repeat hits to your database, you can increase your performance by orders of magnitude. With the upcoming ASP.NET 4 release, caching gets some new extensibility features that make it much easier to plug in alternative cache engines. In addition, Microsoft s Velocity distributed caching service has finally taken on a shipping form, and will ship as the free Windows Server AppFabric Caching Service (because Velocity was to short and easy to remember).
